NEXT MEETING: October 21, 2008

St. Dominic and St. Francis Council of Catholic Women invites all women to our next meeting on Tuesday, October 21 at St. Francis Parish.  We will begin with a prayer service in the Church at 7:30 p.m. followed by a program planned by our Legislative Commission.  Learn about issues that affect Catholic families and are of interest to Catholic women.  As always, we will end with delicious treats and some social time.  We hope to see you there.

 September, 2008

The St. Dominic/St. Francis Council of Catholic Women kicked off our 2008-2009 year of service, education and leadership within our parishes on September 16th with 7:00 PM Mass at St Francis followed by refreshments and “getting to know us”. We had a short presentation of our plans for the upcoming year and invited suggestions as to how we can continue to best serve our community.

May, 2008 This was the last St. Dominic and St. Francis Council of Catholic Women meeting of the 2007-2008 year. The evening began with Mass and installation of the officers for the 2008-2009 year. We moved into the meeting area after Mass where dinner for all Council members was on CCW! It was a relaxing evening with good food, good conversation and a brief wrap-up of the events of the last year.

April 2008

The St. Dominic and St. Francis Council of Catholic Women began this meeting with prayer in the Church, followed by a fun program on cake decorating by one of our members who was a Wilton teacher.

The St. Dominic and St. Francis Council of Catholic Women sponsored another service night on Monday, April 28, in the Father Frank Room at St. Dominic’s at 7:00 PM. We made cards and decorated gift bags that were given to women at the Will County Adult Correctional Facility on Mother’s Day weekend. CCW also provided gifts for the bags (in compliance with the Facility's rules).
Just a reminder: Our May meeting has been changed to May 27th. Fr. David Hankus will celebrate mass with us at 6:30 followed by a potluck supper and meeting. What a great way to end the CCW year.
March 2008

The St. Dominic and St. Francis Council of Catholic Women participated in an evening of Lenten reflection in preparation for Holy Week and the great feast of Easter. Father Richard Bennett of Holy Spirit Catholic Community in Naperville was our guest speaker. His topic was Lent: Back to the Basics. Father Bennett is a long time social justice advocate and is passionate about serving the underprivileged. Fr. Bennett's talk followed a reflection on St. Patrick and St. Joseph, the March Saints.

February 2008

The St. Dominic and St. Francis Council of Catholic Women had a program unlike anything we’ve ever done before! On Tuesday, February 19th, Joe and Sue Guglielmi gave a presentation on “Developing and Preserving Your Family’s Heritage – A Guide to Creating a Family History”. Joe, genealogy hobbyist, showed us ways to develop our family tree, and Sue showed us how to celebrate family traditions and our various cultures as well as how to start developing our own family history. Some of us already working on your genealogy brought along our own exhibits to share. It was a fun filled and informative evening.

We began with prayer in the Church at 7:30, continuing our CCW tradition to pray Mary’s Way of the Cross during Lent. Our program and a short business meeting followed this moving prayer service.

February Service Night

St. Dominic and St. Francis Council of Catholic is sponsoring another service night in the Father Frank Room at St. Dominic Parish on Monday, February 25 at 7:00. We will be making fleece blankets for the children at the Groundwork shelter. We’ve made blankets for the shelter before and they are a big hit with the children. Right now, their supply is low so it’s time for us to replenish it.

There is no sewing involved, so don’t be afraid to come if you have no sewing skills. It simply involves cutting and tying. We will provide the material and the tools, but if you have some fleece you would like to donate, it takes about 1-1/2 yards each of two different patterns to make each blanket. If you have scissors, a rotary cutter, cutting mats or fringe cutters, please bring them, but if you don’t have any of those, don’t let that stop you. Just bring yourself and a willingness to make some kids smile.

January 2008

The St. Dominic/St. Francis Council of Catholic Women held their first meeting of the New Year on Tuesday, January 15 at St. Francis Parish. We met for prayer in the church at 7:30. Father David Hankus was our guest speaker. His topic was a reflection on the Advent and Christmas experience. We had a short business meeting and concluded as usual with social time and great treats. It was a calm and relaxing evening of looking back on our own holiday experiences now that the hustle and bustle is over.

January Service Night
During all the hustle and bustle of the season, some of our members met to make fleece scarves and decorative boxes at one of our service night meetings. These gifts were distributed to 50 residents of Greenleaf during our annual Christmas breakfast there. We will have another service evening coming up soon. In the past, we have made children’s blankets for a shelter, rosaries for soldiers, and hand made Christmas cards for the residents of Greenleaf. Watch this space for the date and details concerning our next project for an evening of fun and service. No artsy-crafty skills are necessary – we can find a job to fit anyone’s special gift!

December 2007

Members started off the holiday season with a delicious dinner held at White Fence Farm. It was a great night to get into the holiday spirit.

November 2007
We began by praying the sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary in the Church and then moved on to the St. Francis Room for a "Fun Night". The business meeting was be short, and the "fun" was a night of Bunco. As always, delicious treats were served and there was plenty of time to talk with old and new friends.

Our members put together a Thanksgiving basket at the meeting for a family who could use some help. CCW provided the turkey.

OCTOBER 2007
The program for this month's meeting was presented by the International Concerns Commission. The speaker was Nanci Peek, a St. Dominic parishioner and nurse, who talked about her recent mission trip to Bolivia. Nanci accompanied a group of college students on the trip and told about their work in Bolivia and the people who were served.

September 2007
Our first meeting of the year was a relaxing, fun evening. It began with a prayer service at 7:30 in the Church, followed by a very short meeting and a fun evening of song based on the television show "The Singing Bee" and featuring songs from old TV shows. We served pizza, dessert and wine (all the important food groups were covered!) and fun.

THANK YOU
Because of your generosity, the St. Dominic/St. Francis Council of Catholic Women was able to deliver a large supply of spiral notebooks to Catholic Charities Back to School event. Your donations helped many kids get a good start for the new school year.

Health Fair ThankYou

A big thank you to all those who supported and attended the Council of Catholic Women’s recent health fair. Approximately 125 parishioners and members of the community took advantage of the event. We also appreciate the donation of time and effort of those who displayed health information and provided free services.

St. Dominic/St. Francis Council of Catholic Women sponsored a FREE health fair in St. Dominic’s gym on Sunday, September 30 from 8:00 AM until 12:00 noon. The health fair was geared toward women, but all were welcome for free screenings for cholesterol and glucose, body fat analysis, body mass index, blood pressure, physical fitness, vision, balance/fall prevention, spinal screening, and foot screening. There were seminars on scams involving the elderly, power of attorney/living will, an automatic defibrillator demonstration, and school bus safety for kids. St. Joseph Hospital, Edward Hospital and the new Bolingbrook Hospital all had representatives there as well as representatives from Avon and the Body Shop. The Fire Department was there with information on CO2 detectors, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. The Lyons Club collected old eyeglasses. There was information on domestic violence, the March of Dimes, poison prevention, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Refreshments were served.

And just to keep us busy on September 30, 2007, we moved over to St. Francis in the afternoon to help at Francis Fest. CCW members provided delicious desserts to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth.

ALL CATHOLIC WOMEN, 18 years of age and older, are invited to attend.
